If you're about to start working in Uruguay, you'll almost certainly be asked for the carné de salud. It's a basic clinical work-aptitude exam. Here's what it is, where to get it, what it costs, and how long it's valid.
What it is
An obligatory clinical work-aptitude exam that everyone must hold to perform a work activity. Authorized health providers issue it (ASSE and others).

It's in person, by appointment:
- Book at your health provider (ASSE or mutualista) — in Montevideo there are dedicated lines and scheduling.
- Attend the clinical exam with your ID.
- You're given the certificate, with a set validity.
Cost and how often
For ASSE users the procedure is free; for non-users there's a cost in UR. The certificate is renewed periodically (the usual validity is two years). Note: there are legislative proposals to review whether it stays obligatory, so check the current status.
