The Certificado Único is, in practice, your “I'm up to date” with the DGI. It sounds bureaucratic, but it blocks concrete things if it isn't valid. Here's what it is, what it's required for, and how to check it.
What it is
The official definition is clear:

«Es el certificado que acredita que los sujetos pasivos que realizan actividades comerciales, industriales, de servicio y agropecuarias, se encuentran al día con sus obligaciones formales y pago de los tributos administrados por la Dirección General Impositiva (DGI).»
In English: It is the certificate accrediting that taxpayers carrying out commercial, industrial, service and agricultural activities are up to date with their formal obligations and payment of the taxes administered by the DGI.

It's not just a piece of paper: it's demanded for important operations. Among them:
- Selling or mortgaging real estate.
- Selling motor vehicles.
- Distributing profits.
- Importing or exporting.
- Issuing or renewing a passport.
