IRPF refund: who gets money back, when and how (2026)
If you overpaid IRPF during the year, the DGI refunds it. Here's who gets a refund, the 2026 dates, and how to collect it — with official sources.
IRPF is paid through the year via withholdings and advances. If you ended up paying too much, it isn't lost: the DGI refunds it. Here's who gets a refund, when, and how to collect it, in plain words.
Credit or balance: two possible endings
At year-end, two things can happen. If too much was withheld, you have a credit (a balance in your favour) and the DGI refunds the difference. If you underpaid, you have a balance and you pay it. Refunds are common for people with several jobs, income changes or lots of deductions.
When it's paid (2026)
The dates depend on your case. Dependent workers with a credit who don't need to file are paid first; refunds that come from a sworn return are paid later. The DGI sets it like this:
Dependent workers with a credit are paid first:
«A partir del 16 de junio comienzan las devoluciones automáticas para trabajadores dependientes.»
In English: From 16 June, automatic refunds for dependent workers begin.

«A partir del 28 de julio se cobrarán las devoluciones con origen en la declaración jurada.»
In English: From 28 July, refunds originating from the sworn return are paid.

The refund is collected at banks or collection networks (Abitab, Redpagos). You can check the status in “Consulta de Devoluciones” in Servicios en Línea, logging in with your digital identity (also via the app or the DGI's WhatsApp). A useful detail: if you file your return before the 15th, the refund is usually available before the end of that month.

If you work on your own (personal services), your refund comes from the sworn return — that is, it's paid from 28 July, once you've filed. So the sooner you file, the sooner you're paid. How to file it: see our annual-return post.
The refund at a glance
| Case | When it's paid |
|---|---|
| Dependent worker with a credit, no return | From 16 June |
| Return filed before the 15th | Before the end of that month |
| Refund originating from a sworn return | From 28 July |
In short: if you overpaid IRPF, the DGI refunds it — dependent workers from mid-June, and return-based refunds from late July. Check your status with your digital identity and collect at a bank or network. Self-employed? File your return as soon as possible. And always verify the current calendar with the DGI.
