Non-contributory old-age and disability pension in Uruguay
A BPS benefit for those who can't retire and lack resources: for old age (70+) or disability. Requirements and how it works — with official sources.
Not everyone reaches retirement with enough contributions. For those cases there's a safety net: the BPS non-contributory old-age and disability pension. It doesn't depend on having contributed, but on age or incapacity and economic situation. Here's how it works.
What it is
A monthly cash benefit from BPS for people who can't access a contributory pension and are in economic need. It has two routes: old age and disability.
Old-age pension
For older people without enough resources. Main requirements:
- Be 70 or older.
- Be a resident of the Republic, with at least 10 years of residence (within the last 20).
- Be in economic need to cover vital needs (own income and that of relatives obliged to support you are considered).
Disability pension
For people with absolute and permanent incapacity for all work, who can't access a pension and lack resources, with the same residence requirement. In cases of severe incapacity, BPS does not assess own or family income.
