Survivor's pension in Uruguay: who can claim it

June 14, 2026

When the contributor dies, their family may access BPS's survivor's pension. Who qualifies, for how long, and how to apply — with official sources.

The death of a family member who contributed leaves, beyond the grief, a practical question: is there any benefit? Yes: BPS pays a survivor's pension to certain relatives. Here's who can claim it, for how long, and how to start.

Who can claim it

The deceased's beneficiaries (causahabientes). The right usually requires a proven relationship and, in several cases, economic dependence:

  • Widow/widower and recognized partners (with some time of marriage or partnership).
  • Single minor children, or adult children with a disability.
  • In some cases, the deceased's parents under dependence conditions.

For how long

For widows/widowers and partners, the duration depends on age at the death: the older the beneficiary, the longer it lasts (it can be lifelong from a certain age, and time-limited for younger people). For children, while the conditions (age or disability) hold.

How to apply

You can start online with a Usuario personal BPS. Have the certificates (death, marriage, birth) digitized to attach them. BPS assesses the relationship and, where applicable, income.
