The unipersonal market in Uruguay: the most popular professions

June 3, 2026

The unipersonal is the gateway to self-employment in Uruguay. We review the state of the market: which activities dominate among Uruguayans and the boom of expats and digital nomads — with official data and sources.

Uruguay is, to a large extent, a country of small firms — and the unipersonal is the most common way to start working on your own. In this post we look at the state of the self-employed market: which professions are most popular among Uruguayans, and which among the growing wave of expats and digital nomads choosing the country.

A country of small firms

Uruguay's business fabric is dominated by small firms. The vast majority are micro and small enterprises, and a great many of them are exactly that — unipersonales: a single person invoicing their own work. The official data shows it clearly:

The figure that sums up the market: almost the entire formal business fabric is small firms.

«Las micro y pequeñas empresas representan el 93,3% del tejido empresarial formal uruguayo.»

In English: Micro and small enterprises represent 93.3% of Uruguay's formal business fabric.

The most popular unipersonales among Uruguayans

Among locals, unipersonales concentrate in commerce, the trades and services — activities one person can start with little investment. The most frequent:

  • Commerce: grocery stores, kiosks, street markets and online shops.
  • Trades: electricians, plumbers, builders, hairdressers, photographers.
  • Food and services: cooking, delivery, cleaning, aesthetics and beauty.
  • Transport: app drivers, freight and courier work.
  • Professionals: accountants, lawyers, architects, health, education.

The boom of expats and digital nomads

In recent years another category has grown sharply: foreigners settling in Uruguay to work remotely. Most are digital professionals, and many open a unipersonal to invoice locally. According to Uruguay XXI, their most common activities are quite specific:

The professions digital nomads bring, in the words of the official promotion agency:

«Las actividades más comunes son el marketing, el desarrollo de software, diseño, e-Commerce y la redacción de contenidos.»

In English: The most common activities are marketing, software development, design, e-Commerce and content writing.

And why they choose Uruguay:

«La combinación entre infraestructura, buena conectividad, estabilidad económica, jurídica y social, así como por su calidad y estilo de vida relajado.»

In English: The combination of infrastructure, good connectivity, economic, legal and social stability, as well as its quality and relaxed lifestyle.

Uruguay also created a residence permit for digital nomads — designed for those who work on their own account or for companies abroad — which made it even easier for this profile to arrive.

Why do so many choose the unipersonal?

Locals and foreigners arrive at the same form for similar reasons:

  • It opens fast, cheap, with no partners and no minimum capital.
  • It fits one-person work perfectly.
  • It has simple régimes: Monotributo for the smallest, IRAE or IRPF for the rest.
  • For tech services, exports carry tax benefits — very attractive for the IT sector.
