Why we're called Tributo

Naming a tax app is a bit of a minefield. Too clever and nobody knows what you do; too literal and it sounds like a government form. We landed on Tributo — and it turns out the word has a far more entertaining backstory than the thing it describes.

A word with Roman roots

“Tributo” comes from the Latin tributum — a payment — which comes from the verb tribuere, “to divide among the tribes”. That “tri-” is the same “three” as in triangle: early Rome was split into three tribes (the Tites, Ramnes and Luceres), and the tax was, literally, the thing shared out across them.

So the very first tax was a community splitting the bill. Two thousand years later you're still splitting the bill with your country — we just think you deserve to see the receipt.

Its surprisingly famous relatives

That little verb tribuere had a big family. From the same root we get contribute, distribute, attribute, retribution and even tribune. Dusty tax words and everyday words, all cousins at the same dinner table.

Our favourite relative: a tribute — as in a tribute concert. In Spanish, “tributo” means both your taxes and an homage. Which means that, technically, paying your DGI bill is a tribute to the Republic. We won't tell anyone if you don't headbang.

Why we chose it

We wanted a name understood instantly across the region: “tributo” reads the same in Spanish and Portuguese and is close enough in English. It's honest — it says exactly what the app is about — and it has just the right pinch of grandeur for something most people quietly dread.

And the “claro”?

Our home is tributoclaro.com. “Claro” means clear — and in Spanish it's also what you blurt out when something finally clicks: ¡claro! That's the whole promise folded into one word: your tribute, minus the mystery. Taxes, but clear.

So that's us — an ancient Roman word for a very modern headache, made claro. Now you know. Claro.
